Grade 5 A complete Year of Daily Common Core Reading Practice

18 months and three editors later, I am finished!  This project has definitely been a labor of love.  A full year of Grade 5 Daily Common Core Reading Practice is complete. Click Here To Access It

This document contains 200 different, quick Common Core reading passages and Common Core aligned questions for each day of the school week.  This has been one of my top selling products, and now it has been combined into a complete one year bundle.

This document is quick and can be easily used as morning review when students first enter the classroom or as nightly homework.  The passages use the same types of professional writing techniques as award winning novels and cover the same types of themes and topics that are covered in fifth grade in order to provide authentic practice.

The questions are text dependent and are asked in multiple choice, short written response, and close reading formats to reflect the variety of formats of questions on the Common Core Assessments.  The questions are written at different levels of Bloom's Taxonomy to encourage students to analyze and deeply understand what they read.

The document provides an opportunity for students to review inferences, details, character analysis, text structure, theme, author's purpose and more topics in short, daily doses.  This supports brain research about providing constant review to help what students learn stick in long term memory.

All informational text passages are not made the same.  The informational text passages in the document focus on topics that really matter and are commonly taught in school such as animal adaptions, the Pony Express, moon phases, plants, and more.  Poetry, plays, realistic fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction passages are all included to assist students with learning about Common Core in multiple formats.

The checklist at the end of each week makes Common Core progress monitoring so much easier.  Students and teachers alike can keep track of the skills that students master each week.

Common Core Number and Operations Fractions Activities

Are you ready for Common Core?  If you are nervous, please don't be.  A variety of teaching ideas will be posted to make the transition to Common Core much easier.

This blog post provides fun hands-on ideas to teach the Common Core Math Standards and most particularly the Common Core Number and Operations Fractions section of the standards.  CCSS.4.NF.A.1, CCSS.4.NF.A.2,
CCSS.4.NF.B.1, 5.NF.A.1, and more standards.

Many of the Common Core Standards want students to be able to understand math concepts in the visual format as well as the numerical format.  Clothespins and paint sticks are great because students can touch, hold, and see the differences between fractional amounts and improper fractions.

To recreate this, draw a number line on a paint stick.  Each paint stick can be divided into different fractional amounts.  Write different fractions on clothespins.  Include mixed numbers and improper fractions.

Students can then place the clothespin at the appropriate point on the blank number line.

Possible Ideas:
~Students can use paint sticks to add or subtract fractions.
~Use to help students visualize the meaning of mixed numbers or improper fractions.
~Determine which fractional amount is missing on the number line.

Different Types of Main Idea Questions

I am a stickler for making sure that students understand what questions are asking them to do.  When I work with students across grade levels, I spend part of the time on question comprehension.  Understanding what a question is asking one to do is the first step.  There are several ways to word a main idea question.  These are the most common formats and also the ones that can be tricky for students.

I begin the unit with main idea manipulatives to help students conceptualize what main idea means.  I use several manipulatives that I create using bean bags, puzzles, etc. After years of seeing so many math counters, fraction circles, etc., I started developing my own reading comprehension skill manipulatives.  I have only posted main idea manipulatives so far and will soon be posting other skills. Click Here for Main Idea Manipulatives

As students read, they have to highlight information in the text that helps them to identify the main idea of a text.

To reinforce main idea and other Common Core reading skills, students complete quick, daily Common Core practice.  I developed very short paragraphs with two Common Core questions for daily five minute review when students first enter the classroom.  I have always used bell ringers and the math problem of the day  I could not find anything like that for comprehension to keep skills sharp so I created my own for the different grade levels that I see daily.Click Here for Daily Common Core Reading Practice

When students rotate to their learning centers, they do main idea task cards.  Since I work with so many grade levels and students vary in ability levels, I made differentiated task cards to cover all bases.Click Here for Differentiated Main Idea Task Cards

Two-Step Fractions Practice (With Detailed Step-by-Step Answers)

We all need more time.  And, if you are like me, you are always trying to get it all done despite only being limited to 24 hours in a day.

I created these task cards to make being a teacher much easier.  These task cards are unique because they not only provide students with practice with two-step fractions, cover fractions that deal with real world problems, and present fractions in multiple contexts, they also come with:

  • A detailed, step-by-step solution for every math problem.  This makes it easier for students to work independently and deeply understand fractions.
  • a printable box.  Print out the number of copies that you need.  Students can work independently or in small groups.
This resource makes test prep so much easier.  Students review fractions (in-depth) at different complexity levels.  The step-by-step solutions, visual examples, and detailed explanations are great for a variety of learning styles.Click Here to Access Them

This is a great resource to review the Common Core Math Standards, prepare for state assessments, and sharpen math skills.

Teaching Integers for Deep Understanding (Negative and Positive Numbers)

Negative and positive numbers seem like a straightforward subject.  I have found students over the years that seem to understand the concept, but when they are faced with a word problem or a situation that involves integers, it becomes easier to distinguish students that have deep level understanding from those that partially understand.

Presenting this concept in many ways is helpful.  This builds deeper understanding. Students  will often say "Oh!  That is what is means" when they see integers presented in mutiple ways.

Students are asked to draw diagrams in their journals of different ways to represent integers (negative and positive numbers).

My favorites are
-as owing (negative) or having (positive) a certain amount of money
-as above sea level (positive) or below sea level (negative)
-as below freezing (negative) or boiling point (positive)

After using multiple examples, students begin to generalize.

Common Core Grade 5 Interactive Notebook (Number Operations in Base Ten

I greatly appreciate the feedback that so many people have given about the interactive notebooks.  Many people have asked about additional Common Core Standards and when they will be finished.  This brand new one is hot off the press!

I really love interactive notebooks because students really dig in deep with concepts. Plus, it makes concepts much easier to understand.  This interactive notebook gets to the heart of each Common Core Standard. Students review Common Core in-depth with fun activities that encourage them to think and justify their answers.Click Here to Access This Interactive Notebook

Background Information Students Need to Know to In Order to Solve Word Problems

What do students need to know in order to effectively solve word problems?  This blog post will provide helpful tips and strategies.

Understanding the Parts of a Word Problem

Some students get lost in all of the information.  Drawing a chart can be helpful.

STEP 1:  Draw a chart to represent the information.

Background Knowledge that is Needed in Order to Solve this Problem:
1.  Be able to translate percentages into decimals.
2.  Identify key words and their meanings. More than requires a problem solver to add (20 +2).

(Special note:  Having students practice these two things before they begin percentage and decimal word problems is very helpful.)

STEP 2:  Add the two amounts.  Dawn has 22 books.

Sometimes a word problem gives vague information.  What I mean is the specific amount of objects is not known to the reader.  Look at the next example to see what is meant.

This problem does not give information about the exact number of books that Mary has. One of the main goals is to help students understand how to write an equation that can be used in order to find the answer.

Background Knowledge that is Needed in Order to Solve this Problem:
1.  Know that a variable can be used to represent an unknown number.
2.  Any variable can be used.
3.  Be able to translate percentages into decimals.

Why is Knowing How to Solve this Type of Word Problem Important?
1.  A word problem that provides vague information like this one helps to determine whether or not students truly understand math concepts and whether or not students know when to apply them.
2.  This understanding also sets the stage for Algebra 1 in the later school years as well as ACT and SAT preparation.  I notice "theoretical" word problems like these on ACT and SAT tests.  It reinforces why this understanding is so important at the elementary and middle school grade levels.

Solution:  Dawn has 1.1x books.
