Reading Comprehension (Text Structure)

Four passages are included to review text structure.  Use this during reading instruction or for test prep.  An answer key is also included.

Reading Comprehension (Main Idea)

Finding the main idea is so much deeper than finding out what a text is mostly about.  It is also about determining how details enable an author to convey a central message.  Finding the main idea is also about determining the central idea of a passage even when it is not directly stated.

I recommend an order for teaching main idea so that students will learn about this topic in depth.

First:  Identify the main idea that is directly stated.
Second:  Identify the main idea that is not directly stated (in simple passages).
Third:  Identify text details that best support the main idea.
Fourth: Identify the main idea in passages that are obscure and focus on many details.
Fifth:  Compare author's craft as related to conveying main ideas. (For example: Explain what techniques one author uses with the techniques of another author).

Reading Comprehension (Integrate Texts)

When a student integrates information from two or more texts, he or she looks for central ideas, details, themes, or other aspects of the passages that bear similarities or differences.
It is best to use passages that are similar for this purpose.

This requires closing reading information and reading with a focus in mind.  All of this leads to developing an understanding about author's craft as well as overarching themes.

Such goals might seem lofty, but with enough practice, students can learn how to closely read text.

I often try to incorporate passages that vary in complexity.  This enables students to strengthen their vocabularies. Over time, I notice growth with my students.

Inference Playing Cards (Update)

Making inferences can be fun!  Lately, I have been on art overdrive and have been updating many of my old products.  My most recent update was to my Inference Playing Cards.  Yes, these are playing cards that review inferences.

I was providing intervention to students that needed to improve in reading.  My goal was to create learning resources that reviewed concepts and made learning fun.  The playing card series was born.

It is fun to watch students really get into the game and build their game strategies as they learn how to infer.  This has been one of my best sellers.  To access this resource, click here.

More Weird and Gross

Do your students love high-interest passages?  These passages are fun to read and help students apply strategies as they read passages that they will enjoy.Click Here To Access It

Why Did You Make Weird And Gross Passages?

Kids love the "ick factor", and our world has plenty of it.  Strange microbes, weird bugs, and odd historical facts are great for helping students learn how science concepts apply to daily life.

Yes, this monkey is actually on my boat!

Okay, okay.  I have an admission to make.  I LOVE the weird and gross factor of nature too.  This love for nature inspires the passages that I create.  My ultimate goal is to make learning fun, and help students build an internal motivation to read.

What Does The Document Contain?

This document contains four illustrated passages, comprehension questions, written response prompts, and an answer key. Your students will enjoy making connections with what to read and the world around them. Simultaneously, this gives students the opportunity to apply reading strategies and build their comprehension skills.Click Here To Access It

Free Sentence Starters--Helping Students Interpret What They Read

If you are looking for a way to help students interpret and explain what they read, this free resource will help.  I love to use sentence starters with students.  After a short time, students are able to write without any support.

Why is this important?  There is a greater push to encourage students to go beyond summarizing.  Being able to interpret what is read sets a strong foundation for later grade levels and helps students comprehend what they read.Click Here to Access It
