Reading Comprehension (Integrate Texts)
When a student integrates information from two or more texts, he or she looks for central ideas, details, themes, or other aspects of the passages that bear similarities or differences.
It is best to use passages that are similar for this purpose.
This requires closing reading information and reading with a focus in mind. All of this leads to developing an understanding about author's craft as well as overarching themes.
Such goals might seem lofty, but with enough practice, students can learn how to closely read text.
I often try to incorporate passages that vary in complexity. This enables students to strengthen their vocabularies. Over time, I notice growth with my students.
