Fun Ideas For Using Clocks to Assess Math Concepts

As this new school year gets underway, you may be looking for new and creative ways to teach a variety of topics and assess understanding.  Clock assessments are one quick and fun way to do this.

Instead of writing the numbers on the clock, such as 1, 2, 3, etc. students can write a math problem or equation that has the answer of 1, 2, 3, 4.  It integrates critical thinking, strategic thinking, and math concepts all at the same time.

Begin by tracing a circle from a bowl or something else round.  Cut out two arrows and get one brass fastener.
Next, attach the pieces to create a clock.

The last step is to instruct students to think of addition, subtraction, multiplication, decimal, fraction, division, etc. questions that result in the numbers 1, 2, 3, etc. when they are solved.

Figurative Language Exit Slips

When I work with middle school students, the  40 minutes that I have them zips by fast.  That is why exit slips are fantastic.  You can assess student learning in less than 5 minutes at the end of class right before they walk out the door.

Each document includes 20 exit slips that are aligned to Common Core Standards.

How to Transform Dollar Store Toys Into Teaching Tools

Is it possible to walk into the Dollar Store and walk out empty handed?  More and more, I am believing that this is impossible.  This could actually be a very good thing!  I have still been on the case to find sneaky ways to make learning more fun.  My recent trip to the Dollar Store was a great inspiration.

This is the package of "slime" that is in the toy section.

With a gentle hit on the back, the slime comes out in one piece leaving a very nice math test tube!  Yippee!

Use them to teach multiplication and division.  Students are able to see the "groups" as they multiply and divide.

This is great for kinesthetic learners because they are able to "feel" the groups.
Add open-ended book discussion questions for small groups.  Each student must respond to the question in their test tube.

Inference Common Core Exit Slips: Grades 6-8

As summer vacation has been coming to an end (weep), I have been trying my best to get resources together for the different grade levels that I work with.

Part of the school day, I work with elementary school students.  The other part of the day, I work with middle school students.  I developed these inference exit slips as a quick assessment that I can give students before they walk out of the door each day.  They are aligned to Common Core Standards RL.1 and RI.1.  Although I developed them for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, I will also use them with some of the 5th grade students that I work with.  This document contains 20 exit slips that cover informational and literature text in a variety of genres.
